2 October 2015 7:53am – Raised Garden Beds

This is my preferred garden design method for vegie, flower and herb growing. It has definitely helped when it comes to managing soil composition and water balance, and because of this, it has meant that we could start growing our own food soon after moving in, whereas if I’d wanted to plant directly into the soil, we’d have had a lot more work ahead of us to get the soil capable of sustaining a decent crop, and would probably still be waiting. And they look great :)

So I would definitely recommend raised beds as a garden design method. Large pots (the larger the better for soil and water management – larger pots dry out more slowly and therefore don’t need to be watered as frequently) or wicking beds too (see this Gardening Australia segment for more info on wicking beds).
